The Historical Maps Studies Laboratory, created by students and professors of the History and Geography Departments of the University of São Paulo started its activities in 2004. Stimulated by the recent works and research on the history of cartography, the group has been working on different activities such as exhibitions, seminars and development of audio-visual material, focusing in the cartographic dimensions of the Portuguese Empire.
Recently our main goals are, first, to put together the catalogs and other cartographical materials donated to the university by Max Justo Guedes –one of the most prominent researchers in Luso American cartography; and second, to accomplish the digitalization and cataloguing, in high definition, of the important cartography collections of this University. We intend to publish on-line these data bases in the middle of 2009, and make it available for researchers with powerful georeferencing searching tools.
